Monday 31st March 2003: Radiohead album onlineI don't know how long these files will remain online, but the new Radiohead cd Hail To The Thief is entirely donwloadable at Idioteque.it. I won't update the site tomorrow by the way, because I'm going to archive some pages, like the MP3's and this weblog.

MP3 Of The Day: Radiohead - Pyramid Song
Also a legal MP3 by Radiohead, Pyramid Song from the Amnesiac album. (AllMusic Entry)

Sunday 30th March 2003: Charts, charts, chartsThe charts are updated once again. There is a new number 1 at the singles- as well as the albums-chart. The highest new entries at both the charts are The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

MP3 Of The Day: Spoon - Jonathon Fisk
One of the many indie-cd's that were released in 2002 is Kill The Moonlight by the Texas-based band Spoon. A big disadvantage is that the album has is weak points, unlike it's predecessor Girls Can Tell, which maintains a high standard throughout the entire album. The album does feature a few major highlights, particularly The Way We Get By and Jonathon Fisk, which you can download at Epitonic. (AllMusic Entry)

Saturday 29th March 2003: New CD'sMotel Mozaïque was very nice yesterday, especially The Thrills were very good. After a false start The Faint also got the crowd excited. If I have some spare time soon I'll post a review of the festival.

I've also found time to buy some cd's the last days. Yesterday I've already bought The Gray Race by Bad Religion, Semi-Detached by Therapy?, Club Nouveau by The Travoltas and Egyptology by World Party at the cost of 1 euro 50 a piece. Today I've also purchased Hot Rail by Calexico, Two Sides by The Mock Turtles and Boys For Pele by Tori Amos for the total price of 4 euro.

MP3 Of The Day: Bad Religion - Sorrow
Together with The Offspring Bad Religion is the best punkband of the 90's in my opinion. At least they are around much longer than most bands in the genre. You can download the song Sorrow, amongst others, of their last album. (AllMusic Entry)

Friday 28th March 2003: To RotterdamLater today I'll be on my way to Rotterdam to attend the Motel Mozaïque festival. I'm looking forward the most to Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, The Kills and Face Tomorrow. I've put a link to an MP3 of the last band below.

MP3 Of The Day: Face Tomorrow - Worth The Wait
Like I already said above, I'm really looking forward to seeing Face Tomorrow. Their song Worth The Wait is the so-called Rockalert on music channel The Box this entire week. The Rotterdam-based band does even have it's AllMusic entry: (AllMusic Entry)

Thursday 27th March 2003: Motel MozaïqueTomorrow is the kick-off of the Motel Mozaïque festival in Rotterdam. The next artists are bound to play in Nighttown on Friday: Incense, Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) & The Jicks, Erlend Øye (Kings Of Convenience), The Thrills, Das Pop, Out Hud, Face Tomorrow, The Faint and The Kills, and I hope to see the most I can of these bands. Bonnie Prince Billy and Admiral Freebee will also be playing, in the theater of Rotterdam. I can't visit the second day of the festival. Amongst the bands that I won't see Saturday are Scala, Mauro & The Grooms, Postmen en Arthur Lee & Love (which really sucks, because I love Love). The full program is available here.

MP3 Of The Day: Clem Snide - Moment In The Sun
Clem Snide is the missing link between Neutral Milk Hotel and the solo-work of Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse). In 2001 their song Moment In The Sun was cast as the theme for the NBC-comedy Ed, when the rights to use Foo Fighters' Next Year expired. (AllMusic Entry)

Tuesday 25th March 2003: New CD: Bigger LoversIt's a bit above my normal average, but today I've bought my sixth album since last wednesday. This time it's the CD is How I Learned To Stop Worrying by The Bigger Lovers, at the not to expensive price of 1 euro 50. I already owned the single Threadbare by them, but this is my first full album by these Americans. Other news: Ananova reports that the British group Toploader is calling it a day. Read the full story here.

MP3 Of The Day:
The Bigger Lovers - Bought Your Ghost
Not only do the The Bigger Lovers stand near to Big Star alphabetical, there is also a big similarity between these two bands musicaly. Since Big Star existed about thirty years earlier than the Bigger Lovers, it has to be that the first band influenced the last. The albums of The Bigger Lovers are being released by Munich Records, who also have Centro-matic, For Stars and Mother Hips under their care. (AllMusic Entry)

Monday 24th March 2003: Small updatesI've used most of my free time today to remove some small mistakes from the various pages on the site. I've also added some new links to the links-section.

MP3 Of The Day: Cave In - Anchor
The song Anchor by Cave In is a mixture of the alternative rock of Bush, the grunge of Soundgarden and the metal of Neurosis, while their album Antenna has it's Radiohead-like passages once in a while. The Massachusetts based band is touring with the Foo Fighters and the less famous, but nevertheless nice Piebald (download the song Just A Simple Plan for example). (AllMusic Entry)

Sunday 23rd March 2003: Singles and Albums Top 20 updatedLike every other sunday, I've updated my singles and albums charts again. The highest new entries this week are The Mountain Goats at the albums and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists at the singles. I've made the song Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone? by the last band MP3 Of The Day. I've also added another CD to my collection today, namely the self-titled debut by the Doors for 2.50 euro.

MP3 Of The Day: Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone?
One of the newest releases on the Lookout label is by Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, who followed up their gem from 2001, The Tyranny Of Distance, by Hearts Of Oak this year. The frontman of the thousand and first band from the inexhaustible source of nice artists that is called New York is, like the name already gives away, Ted Leo (ex-Chisel). (AllMusic Pagina)

Saturday 22nd March 2003: MP3 Of The DayYesterday I received a message in my mailbox in which I was asked if I could make a certain song by a certain band the MP3 Of The Day. Since this is the first time somebody asked me this I surfed to the URL that was given to me without any expectations and start downloading the MP3. To my surpise it appears to be a fairly professional production of some sort of mixture between metal and alternative rock and it sounds kind of nice after hearing it for the first time. So here it is, thanks to Bart Breij:

MP3 Of The Day: NME - Rukonice
On the 13th of March last there was a studentdemonstration in The Hague concerning possible cuts by the Dutch authorities in education. Before and after the protestmarch NME gave a short performance on the Malieveld. This band from the north of Holland describe their style as 'moonrock', I would call it alternative metal. (No AllMusic Entry)

Don't forget to come back tomorrow to see the updated charts.

Friday 21st March 2003: 50 PenceDon't let the picture below scare you off. It just goes with the great MP3 I'm linking below.

MP3 Of The Day: 50 Pence - In Da Pub
You have probably heard about 'the new hiphopsensation' 50 Cent (not worth the link), which is played on tv and radio almost constantly. There is some clone of The Streets (again not worth the link) who has made a raillery of the song In Da Club, titled In Da Pub. You should really hear this one, even if you don't like hiphop, like yours truly. (No AllMusic Entry)

Thursday 20th March 2003: IraqDespite that my weblog is mainly about music and that it attracts visitors with musical interest, I would like to say a few things about Iraq. Because mister Bush has ignored the United Nations, thousands of people will die. Amongst them will probably be few American soldiers, yet a lot of innocent civilians. Although I feel it would be better if the Iraqi people were 'freed' of Saddam Hussain, I fear that this unilateral action by the US will harm Iraq more than it will help it.

And now about music again: I've bought three CD's again today: Mouth To Mouth by The Levellers, Utopia Parkway by Fountains Of Wayne and Blue Sky Mining by Midnight Oil for the total price of 5 euro 50.

MP3 Of The Day:
Desaparecidos - Happiest Place On Earth
The interference of the US in Iraq might lead to new material of the American emo/punk/indie/rock-band Desaparecidos. This side project of Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) is known for their critical stance towards their fatherland. Their music suits the topicalities well, especially if you take the following lyrics from the song Happiest Place On Earth into account:

In the computer’s blue glare,
the bombs burst in the air
There was a city once-- now nothing is there
Our freedom comes at their expense
It makes sense,
doesn’t it? Dollars and cents

Wednesday 19th March 2003: New CD: The Loud FamilyI've purchased a cd once again today. The album The Tape Of Only Linda by The Loud Family was only €1 at the Music Store in Rotterdam Alexander.

MP3 Of The Day: The Loud Family - Soul Drain
A link to a song by The Loud Family seems appropriate. This band is the follow-up to the Paisley Underground band Game Theory, one of the better bands of the 80's. The song Soul Drain is the opening track of the album The Tape Of Only Linda, which was available for just 1 euro in Rotterdam until today. (AllMusic Entry)

Tuesday 18th March 2003: To AmsterdamI'm off to Amsterdam in a few minutes to see The Kills perform in Paradiso. And something that has really nothing to do with the last sentence: There's an interview with Turin Brakes at the Virgin-website.

MP3 Of The Day:
McLusky - To Hell With Good Intentions
Steve Albini is one of the world's most famous producers, he's worked with artists like Bush, Nirvana, The Breeders and The Pixies in the past. The last band was probably one of the major influences of McLusky, who released their album McLusky Do Dallas in 2002. Albini produced the cd. The song To Hell With Good Intentions is a perfect example of the dynamics and energy that the trio maintain during the entire album. (AllMusic Entry)

Monday 17th March 2003: The KillsTomorrow The Kills play live at Paradiso in Amsterdam and I'm definitely gonna see them. At their website you can watch the video of their single Wait. Here you can find some streamed songs.

MP3 Of The Day: Jetplane Landing - Acrimony
One of the best known MP3-sites is MP3.com. Although they lack the quality of other sites, like Epitonic, they do have a great amount of bands. One of these bands is the English Jetplane Landing. After recording a split-single with Seafood, they released Els Quatre Gats last year. The song Acrimony is available for download from MP3.com.(No AllMusic Entry)

Sunday 16th March 2003: New chartsThe new albums- and singles top 20's are now online. Highest new entries are Bright Eyes at the singles and Blur at the albums.

MP3 Of The Day: Aereogramme - Wood
Another new albums top 20 entry is Sleep And Release by the Scottish Aereogramme. After first hearing this record it seems to be just another Scottish indie band like The Delgados, Belle & Sebastian and Mogwai. But after playing the cd a few times more it gets obvious why people like Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) and John Peel (BBC) have spoken highly of this group. That's probably also the reason why they have been signed by the Matador label. (AllMusic Entry)
