Wednesday 30 April 2003: White Stripes in HollandFestivalInfo.nl is reporting that the White Stripes will perform at Lowlands this summer. The site of the festival itself however doesn't have any news on the Stripes. Other bands that will perform at the festival are: Caesar, The Coral, The Music, Mando Diao, The Polyphonic Spree, The Raveonettes and Schneider TM.

MP3 Van De Dag:
Division Of Laura Lee - Need To Get Some
The Swedish rockband Division Of Laura Lee, DOLL in short, hasn't been able to profit from the succes of The Strokes, The White Stripes and their fellow countrymen The Hives. DOLL has a sound that is less open to the mainstream public. Main references are The Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine en vooral Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. On 6 may they will play at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, where they will most likely also play this song. Need To Get Some is after Pretty Electric the second single of the album Black City. You can find the videoclip of this song at the DOLL-website. (AllMusic Entry)

Monday 28 April 2003: Kuusumun ProfeettaThe new Finnish sensation?

MP3 Of The Day:
Kuusumun Profeetta - Vuosisadan Vaihteessa
Fans of acoustic music shall find that Kuusumun Profeetta, formerly known as Moon Fog Prophet, is really music to their heart's content. Think in the direction of Kings Of Convenience or The Mountain Goats but then two times as slow. If you like this song, there's a lot more Finnish music available for download at the Ektro records website. Unfortunately, Ektro is also a bit into Krautrock, witness the released of Acid Mothers Temple and Faust on the label. (No AllMusic Entry)

Sunday 27 April 2003: ChartsThe new charts are online again. Serafin reached the first place at the singles-chart, while Mellowdrone is the highest new entry. Read more about Mellowdrone below under the header MP3 Of The Day. The albums-chart is still being lead by The New Pornographers. Joy Zipper is the highest new entry at number fifteen.

MP3 Of The Day:
Mellowdrone - Fashionably Uninvited
The oneman-band Mellowdrone didn't only put the song Fashionably Uninvited online, the Mellowdrone EP is entirely put up for download. Mellowdrone, aka Jonathan Bates, has recorded the EP in his own bedroom, with help of drummer Scott Ellis, but the 6-track doesn't suffer from a lack of professionality. Although he opened shows for artists like Johnny Marr, Mellowdrone are more up Radiohead's street. (AllMusic Entry)

Saturday 26 April 2003: Playstation 2It might have something to do with the Playstation 2 that is in my room since today, but I don't have enough time to mention something engaging. I did however update the links-page again, mainly with other weblogs.

MP3 Of The Day:
Postal Service - Such Great Heights
Because the Subpop-band Postal Service features members of Death Cab For Cutie and Dntel, the band sounds not surprisingly like a mixture of these two bands. Other members of the band have been in Tattle Tale and Rilo Kiley (Saddle Creek) before. The Postal Service is also very similar to the Magnetic Fields andthe Notwist. The single Such Great Heights features PS-covers by two other Subpop-bands, The Shins and Iron And Wine. (AllMusic Entry)

Friday 25 April 2003: New Essex Green albumIf there's one band from the Elephant 6-scene that can match the cheerfulness of Of Montreal it has to be the Essex Green. On april 8th the Merge-label released their new album The Long Goodbye in the United States. Track & Field will also put the record on the European market on the 19th of May. The Essex Green are also touring in Europe, where they will probably visit England, Scandinavia and Holland at least.

MP3 Of The Day:
Essex Green - The Late Great Cassiopia
Through the link above you can download a song by the Essex Green for free. (AllMusic Entry)

Thursday 24 April 2003: Happy Tree FriendsThe site of Happy Tree Friends features a couple of funny movies. This is the superlative of malicious pleasure.

MP3 Of The Day: Limblifter - I Wonder If
The New Pornographers are amongst the nicest new bands of the last decade. Before this supergroup was formed the members played in different bands, including Zumpano, Thee Evaporators, Destroyer and in the case of drummer Kurt Dahle Limblifter. That Canadian band released their self-titled debutalbum in 1996. Despite the horrible cd-cover it's a melodic power-pop album which is definitely worth listening to. The standout track is opener Vicious, but I Wonder If is the only MP3 I could find of this cd. (AllMusic Pagina)

Wednesday 23 April 2003: Turin Brakes in TivoliYesterday Turin Brakes performed at Tivoli in Utrecht. They played a lot of new material (which is to be expected), some songs from the Optimist LP and finished the gig with an AC/DC-cover. The support act was Fionn Regan, but I didn't get to hear any of his songs.

MP3 Of The Day: Brendan Benson - Let Me Roll It
The latest single of the Detroit-based singer/songwriter Brendan Benson is called Metarie, taken from the wonderful Lapalco album. The song appears on an EP with two versions of the titletrack, another song from taken the album (You're Quiet) and two non-album tracks (Alternative To Love and Let Me Roll It). Through the website of his record label StarTime (also known from The Walkmen, French Kicks and The Natural History) you can download the last track, which is originally written by Paul McCartney. (AllMusic Entry)

Monday 21 April 2003: New purchaseI've bought the cd Music For Pleasure by Monaco today. Monaco is the band of bassist Peter Hook (ex-New Order, ex-Revenge) and is know from the small hit What Do You Want From Me? The record only costed me 75 eurocents by the way.

MP3 Of The Day: Piebald - American Hearts
The Amerikaanse emo-core/nerd-rock formation Piebald is releasing a new album this year, titled We Are The Only Friends We Have. They have already released tons of cd's, singles and split-singles (with artists like Cave In, 7% Solution, In Vain) before. The follow-up to Just A Simple Plan as a single will be American Hearts. (AllMusic Entry)

Sunday 20 April 2003: New charts againIt's Sunday again and that means the new charts are online again! The New Pornographers are at the number one spot on both the singles and the albums chart. The highest new entries are Fireside (singles) and Athlete (albums).

MP3 Of The Day: Fireside - Throw It Away
The leading country in punkmusic over the last couple of years is of course Sweden. It gave the world Millencolin, The Hellacopters, The Hives and Fireside. With Get Shot, the last band is responsible for the best punkrecord of the year so far. Like their fellow countrymen The Hives, Fireside have the ability to make an entire album full of catchy songs, a quality many punkbands lack. The new single All You Had isn't available on MP3 legally, but Throw It Away is almost just as entertaining. (AllMusic Entry)

Saturday 19 April 2003: Guadalcanal Diary re-issuesGreat news for fans of 80's guitarpop: The first two lp's of Guadalcanal Diary will be re-released on the Collectables-label. Even though Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man/Jamboree isn't being released until May 6th, you can already pre-order it through Amazon. The debutalbum of Guadalcanal Diary, Walking In The Shadow Of The Big Man, has only been available on cd for a little while and its follow-up Jamboree has never even been published on cd before. The third album 2x4 is also very rare, but Flip-Flop is still available, on a limited basis of course. Singer/guitarist Murray Attaway's solowork can even be found between the cheap cd's in some recordstores.

MP3 Of The Day: Kings Of Leon - Molly's Chambers
The Kings Of Leon are three brothers and a cousin from Nashville, Tennessee. Their music stands midway between the alt.country of The Jayhawks and the garage-rock of The Strokes, which results in some sort of The Mother Hips-like country-rock. Their debutalbum will be released later this year, but the Holy Roller Novocaine EP is already available at better recordstores. (AllMusic Entry)

Friday 18 April 2003: Turin BrakesIt's official: next Tuesday I will go to the Turin Brakes gig in Tivoli, Utrecht. The support act is an Irish singer/songwriter, Fionn Regan, from whom I've never heard anything.

MP3 Of The Day:
The Raveonettes - Attack Of The Ghost Riders
The Danish band Raveonettes consists of Sharin Foo (vocals/bass) and Sune Rose Wagner (guitar/vocals), who was playing in Psyched Up Janis until a couple of years ago. Their album Whip It On is amongst the best debuts of 2002. It's so good, that it's still in my album top 20. All songs on this cd are in Bb minor, as is the first single Attack Of The Ghost Riders. (AllMusic Entry)

Thursday 17 April 2003: Weblog cleaned upMy messages from the first half of April have moved to the weblog-archief.

MP3 Of The Day: Greendive - Slowdown
Last month I received an e-mail from a guy called Bart Breij, asking me if I could make a song by NME MP3 Of The Day. I did that and today he mailed me again. This time the band is a five-piece from Breda called Greendive. The band is played on 3FM and Studio Brussel and they've even performed live at Dolf Jansen's show on Radio 3. The band's influenced are clearly Jeff Buckley, Radiohead and above all Muse. The song Slowdown even features a sample from the Muse-song Bliss. (No AllMusic Entry)
